Levine Senior Center Class Descriptions

AM Power Up

Get ready for your week to destress and feel more powerful than ever with our AM Power Up class. Your heart will be pumping with our music as we take you through a series of punches and kick combinations, cardio & line dance that can be modified to be low or high impact depending on your level. Start your week moving and improve your cardiovascular system as you do something just for you.

Cardio Exercise (Circuit)

Combine fun with fitness to increase your cardiovascular and muscular endurance power with a standing circuit workout. Upper-body strength work with hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles, and a ball is alternated with low-impact aerobics choreography. A chair is used for standing support, stretching and relaxation exercises.

Chair Aerobics (Classic)

Have fun and move to the music through a variety of exercises designed to increase muscular strength, range of movement and activities for daily living. Hand-held weights, elastic tubing with handles and a ball are offered for resistance. A chair is available if needed for seated or standing support.

Chair Pilates

Chair Pilates will move your whole body through a complete series of seated and standing Pilates positions. Chair support is offered to safely perform a variety of seated and standing postures designed to increase flexibility, balance and range of movement. Restorative breathing exercises and final relaxation will promote stress reduction and mental clarity.

Pilates

Pilates is a system of controlled exercises developed by Joseph Pilates that engages the mind and conditions the total body. The blend of strength and flexibility training improves core strength, balance, posture, concentration, and reduces stress. Pilates takes a balanced approach so that no muscle group is overworked, and the body moves as an efficient holistic system.

Strength & Tone

A class for all levels concentrating on building strength to underutilized muscles. The entire class can be done sitting or using the chair for assistance while developing balance.

Stretch & Flex

This is done through stretching and strengthening the specific muscles that are commonly associated with strains and sprains. If performed correctly and regularly, these exercises may reduce the incidences of muscle strain and sprains. Flexibility exercises, also called range-of-motion exercises or plain old stretching, keep your muscles and your joints moving freely. Flexibility exercises should feel like “comfortable tension.” You feel only stretching, never pain.

Tai Chi

The ancient discipline of Tai Chi combines agile steps; joint safe exercise and mental strength to improve mobility, breathing, and relaxation in ways that help you feel in greater control over your daily life.  It’s a joint safe way for people of all ages to enjoy life and meet new friends, while taking control of your physical, emotional and mental health.

Tap

This class will provide the dancer with the opportunity to discover the joy of the tap dancer within. In addition to understanding time and rhythm, the dancer will develop an understanding of tap vocabulary such as flaps, shuffles and ball change.  This class will enable the student to successfully execute these and other basic, fundamental tap dance skills. Tap utilizes rhythm, syncopation, and sound in addition to movement. An emphasis is placed on musicality, expression, and improvisation.

The Beat (Exercise Ball Drumming)

Cardio drumming is turning simple movement into a full body workout leaving you smiling, and feeling amazing! ... A typical cardio drumming workout consists of a warmup session, followed by a cardiovascular workout specifically tailored to the attendees, and finally a drummer's cool down.

Yoga

This class includes gentle postures, breathing techniques, relaxation, movements to increase range of motion and stretching. Individualized instruction and modifications are given to accommodate seniors with chronic symptoms such as muscle or joint pain, arthritis, osteoporosis, low back pain, problems with balance, weakness, or fatigue.

Zumba

This class is for active older adults who are looking for a modified Zumba® class that recreates the original moves you love at a lower intensity. How It Works: The design of the class introduces easy-to-follow Zumba® choreography that focuses on balance, range of motion and coordination. Come ready to sweat and prepare to leave empowered and feeling strong. Benefits: Class focuses on all elements of fitness: cardiovascular, muscular conditioning, flexibility, and balance!

Water Exercise Class Descriptions

One of the beauties of water exercise is that you can work at your own pace. Please be safe and work at a level with which you are comfortable. Also, please inform your instructor before class begins if you have a condition for which he/she may make modifications. Otherwise, instructors are generally available after class to answer questions.

Open Swim

Opened to partners Monday & Wednesday 1:30PM to 4:30PM & Thursday & Friday 1:30PM to 3:30PM. Open Swim is a non-instructor led program. Participants can use this time to work out freely and are required to wear water shoes. Participants are required to register for open swim in the Center Library. Water exercise supports and encourages free movement and acts as a resistance to build muscle strength and flexibility.

Arthritis Plus

Arthritis pain is reduced by water exercise. This class focuses on increasing both your flexibility (through stretching) and your strength (through low impact cardio-respiratory work such as jogging, kicking, etc.) while acknowledging your painful joints. Skilled and knowledgeable instructors focus on increasing your range of motion and overall strength (including the heart muscle!) without doing harm to aching joints. Brief intervals of stretching/cardio/stretching/cardio, etc., are often employed. This class can also provide excellent rehabilitation opportunities after injuries and surgeries even if you don’t have arthritis.

Move It or Lose It (MILI)

This is a great chance to increase your mobility, strength, and flexibility. The instructor leads you through approximately 15-20 minutes of moderate intensity water aerobics (makes your heart and lungs strong!) followed by a nice, long stretching session. This class can act as a bridge class to take you from Arthritis Plus to a more active class experience such as MILI Plus or Aerobics. This class can also provide excellent rehabilitation opportunities after injuries and surgeries.

Move It or Lose It PLUS (MILI Plus)

You can step up your aerobic activity with this class. You’ll still have a fair amount of stretching, but the moderate intensity aerobics portion of the class will last approximately 20-25 minutes.

Water Aerobics

Aerobics classes are designed to use your entire body through working your cardio-respiratory system, using equipment and the water’s resistance to strengthen and tone, and improving balance.

Classes typically follow this format: warm up, approximately 25-30 minutes of aerobic activity, cool down, muscle strengthening (often abdominal), and stretch. This format may change per the instructor and class needs. Depending on the instructor, this class can range from moderate to high intensity.

Water aerobics classes enroll participants that have many levels of muscle strength and ability; a beginner can take this class alongside a veteran. Exercises are appropriate across fitness levels.
